Tips on Meeting Your Apartment Neighbors

1. Cup of Sugar- The age old “Cup o’ Sugar” routine is a great one and always works. Even if you don’t need the sugar, just pop next door with an empty measuring cup at a reasonable time and politely introduce yourself and ask if you could borrow a “cup of sugar.” This works best at dinner time. Do it any earlier and you’ll just look silly. And don’t stand around talking for too long either, get the sugar, exchange names and greetings, and get back to your apartment. This opens up the conversation route for the next time you pass each other and you no longer have to put your head down and act like you are making sure your laces are tired.

2. The Community Areas- Hit the fitness center, the clubhouse, or the laundry room at your community. Areas that are commonly visited by the other residents. Strike up a conversation with someone who looks friendly and receptive. Who knows, you may make an awesome friend. If you have a dog, take them out walking often. People love making friends with dogs and their owners. Just don’t hang out by the dumpster…that’s just weird…and stinky.

3. Hang Out On The Patio - Get some lawn chairs and chill out on your patio or balcony whenever you have a nice day. Chit chat with the passer-by’s. Just don’t hoot and whistle like a construction worker. Nothing is more offensive and is a very easy way to NOT make friends.

Hopefully, you will have a few new friends in no time and you’ll find that most neighbors aren’t Apartmental like the ones in the video. Who knows, maybe you are my neighbor? Come and meet me!

    NEW YUCK CITY!

    That’s nice ;-)
    I remember the first time I went to O’Hare. I had just lost my Brazilian passport (in New York, early 2003), and had a military ID (issued in Rio de Janeiro), and the guy who was checking IDs asked if I had a passport. I was freaking out… Lol. Then his supervisor said it was OK for me to travel with my military ID. Ironically, I just lost my passport again… last night. I don’t remember putting my cell phone number on it, thus I don’t think I’ll recover it, sadly ;-(

    Are you near an Ikea? They have very reasonably priced furniture and household stuff like rugs and curtains, just don't expect the furniture to last forever. I have some Ikea stuff that has lasted about 3 years to date, but I have heard of others who had stuff fall apart after a year or two. You could get all of that stuff for under $1500.

    You could also try thrift stores, garage sales, and the classifieds or craigslist if you don't mind used.

    Don't forget to pack toilet paper in your purse or something. It always ends up in the last box off the truck. Always! Of course, this could be your opening to introduce yourself to your neighbors. Also, scissors/razor knife, a screwdriver, pliers, pencil, measuring tape, and a water bottle or paper cups (again with the last box off the truck phenomenon) always come in handy on move in day.

    I think it is very important to meet you neighbors. My husband and I did, and three years later, we are very close friends with a couple that are neighbors, and get along really well with the others. We do live in a small building, only 4 units, but it's great to have someone to hang out with in the building, and we each have a key to each others' apartments in case of emergencies (Not that I recommend just handing your key over to whomever seems nice. We just really know them well now and trust them, and they us. Your landlord or property manager can always get in if there is an emergency.).

    Cleaning stuff:
    Bleach (all bathroom and kitchen surfaces)
    Windex or vinegar (windows and mirrors, outside of oven door)
    All purpose cleaner like Formula 409 (counters, inside fridge and cabinets/drawers, fridge handles, pretty much anything hard as long as it is not painted wood or similar)
    Floor cleaner and mop (If only a small area of your new place is tiled you can get away with a Swiffer Wet Jet or the Clorox one. If you have lots of tile, don't even bother. Invest in a mop and bucket)
    CLR (used to remove rust and white lime/calcium buildup from faucets, shower heads and drains. You may not need this if you have a newer or well taken care of place. I would wait to check if you need it before buying it)
    Mr. Clean Magic Erasers (For removing scuffs and crap from walls! As you bring in furniture and boxes you may bump the walls and these remove the scuffs and any dirt or cigarette tar from the previous tenants)
    Vacuum
    Stiff scrub brush (for tub and sinks)
    Sponges with scrubby green side (sinks, counters, cabinet fronts, dishes, etc.)

    DON'T FORGET PAPER TOWELS OR RAGS!
    I did that when I moved and had to run out and buy them for twice as much as normal from Walgreens. Although still not as important as toilet paper. ;)

    Also, if there is not already a bar or chain lock on your door, ask if you can install one. It's one of those things that helps me feel safer when I'm home alone.

    3. Los Angeles: 639 billion dollars;
    4. Chicago: 460 billion dollars.
    According with whatever data info, I found it on Wikipedia, Chicago and Paris have the same GDP. I’m sure it can’t be the same exact number, so Paris comes out as 5th largest economy among cities worldwide.

    I've done 3, 32, 34, and 45…. you don't need to learn Morse Code to do 4….before there was high speed Internet I would make the sound of modems handshaking….and i would say to people after they said something "that was easy for you to say"

    here is another one….continually do the music and the hi ho silver away from the lone ranger (think the music is the William Tell overture)

    i think we’re actually wealthier than LA right now cause LA’s unemployment rate is higher than Chicago’s & they dont have federal reserves & futures stock exchanges like we do. hollywood can only do so much for LA but right now not enough.

  10. LucasEllerNewYork on January 10th, 2008 2:43 am

    I used Wikipedia as data source for the GDP comparison between LA and Chicago. LA has a 179 billion dollars higher GDP than Chicago. It may change within a year, but not so likely. I used to travel to Chicago a lot, for business, pleasure and… well… I was in and out of love with someone there… lol… 7 years ago. I thought it was yesterday… lol.
    What do you do in Chicago? What kind of work? Involved with performing arts somehow?

    CHI-TOWN sure sounds better than the BIG ROTTEN APPLE.

  12. LucasEllerNewYork on January 10th, 2008 11:27 am

    It’s funny we don’t think much about it, Chicago is actually the 4th wealthiest city in the world, after:
    1. Tokyo (nobody talks about it, because the Japanese are lame bitches… lol;
    2. New York (among the only 2 cities worldwide with a GDP surpassing 1,1 trillion dollars, not so distant from Tokyo numberwise);
    3. Los Angeles;
    4. Chicago.

    Ok well i just finished freshman year and you really dont need a backpack. All the things you need you just carry in your arms ( only a book and notebook ) my backpack was such a waste last year i only carried my makeup in it hahah :) so I would go with a purse next year, it carries your walet/money, makeup, pens, and an agenda which will come in handy. you have enough time between classes to drop off the books just used to get the next classes books. I love high school and this will really help!!!!!

    remember purse not backpack! and if you do get a backpack get a simple jansport with one little pocket and one big pocket. their so simple i love them!
