Apartment Living: Finding and Creating Your Home Apartment

Looking for an apartment can be a very tedious and time consuming task. Not to mention the stress involved of making sure that the apartment has everything that you want. However, your worries don’t end there. Once you have gotten your perfect apartment, next comes fitting it with furniture and making it into a home.

If you are lucky, you already have furniture, and won’t need to worry about outfitting your apartment and spending your precious budget. But, if you are some of those unlucky few who has nothing but a few items to bring to their new apartment there are different ways to cut corners and save yourself some money in the process of turning your apartment into a home.

If you don’t mind used items, there are a couple of great ways to get the things you need at affordable prices. One way would be to spend a Saturday or two going to yard/garage sales. This is a great way to find awesome items at very affordable prices—and don’t be afraid to haggle prices. Haggling prices is one of the fun aspects of yard sales. Going to yard sales to look for the items you need allows you to get all the essentials you need and still have money left over to buy other things to add personal touches to your new apartment. Another way would be to go to places such as the Salvation Army or a Good Will. These places have used items that people have donated, and are at very affordable prices. Shopping at either these two places also has the added benefit of helping those in need, because they are non-profit organizations.

If you just can’t stand the thought of having used furniture in your home and have a tight budget, then stick with the essentials on your first shopping spree to outfit your apartment. There are a handful of “essential” items that you will need within the first days of apartment living. A bed, but remember to check the size of your bedroom and see how big of a bed it will hold, as well as keeping in mind that you will need the sheets, pillows and comforter to go with it. A kitchen table or desk and a chair is essential because you have to eat and if you are in school, you’ll need a place to study. If you can’t afford a real table, you can always look into getting a card table; and a card table has the added perk that a lot times it comes with 4 chairs. Dishes and cookware are extremely important items to get as it is a lot cheaper to eat at home and buy groceries than it is to go out to eat every meal. And you can be picky about what you get, just start with the basics. Other things that you need to consider are the number of trash cans you need, taking into consideration the number of bathrooms and whether or not you will be recycling, a shower curtain and rings, curtains and blinds if they don’t come with the apartment, a chest of drawers or hanging closet organizer if you don’t have much closet space and a sofa or futon for when you have company.

All in all, buying and obtaining the things that you need to turn your perfect apartment into a home can be a very fun task. With an apartment being a small space, you don’t need a lot to turn it into a home. There are also numerous ways to save money in getting the items that you need, you just need to know where to look.

Help answer the question about apartment living

What breed of dog would be best for apartment living and owner with busy schedule?
I live alone in a spacious apartment with a cat. I'd like to get a small dog. I work about 8-9 hours a day. My dog, like my cat, would have my undivided attention when I am home, but is this situation a bad one for the quality of a dog's life?

    That’s nice ;-)
    I remember the first time I went to O’Hare. I had just lost my Brazilian passport (in New York, early 2003), and had a military ID (issued in Rio de Janeiro), and the guy who was checking IDs asked if I had a passport. I was freaking out… Lol. Then his supervisor said it was OK for me to travel with my military ID. Ironically, I just lost my passport again… last night. I don’t remember putting my cell phone number on it, thus I don’t think I’ll recover it, sadly ;-(

    Umm…hate to tell you this, but rabies is not the only problem with bats. Bat droppings can cause serious illness and death from Histoplasmosis. This is a very bad health issue and really needs to be address by your local board of health. Infection occurs when spores, carried by the air are inhaled the disease can cause high fever, blood abnormalities, pneumonia and even death.

    The only way to tell if a bat has rabies is to have the bat tested. I would NOT try to touch a bat because you could get bit (they also have fleas and their fleas carry diseases and they also have a type of parasite similar to bed bugs). However, if you have found a dead bat, pick it up with gloves on and tongs or a shovel and place it in a bag in the refrigerator (do not freeze it) until you can get it to your local health department for testing. Even if one bat doesn't test for rabies, the others still might have rabies. I know you don't want to make your landlord angry, but I think the health of you and your family is more important. I think your landlord is in violation of the health code and needs to be reported to your local board of health. Also, why would you want to continue to put up with this? I would move.

    Seriously, check out these web sites:

    Well you can certainly use another access point in bridge mode, or just pick up a wireless bridge. as far as cascading them, i suspect there is a limit since they would all be on the same IP network. I would think you'd start to see some funky timeouts or delayed collisions. You would also be contending for the that same part of the spectrum with all the wirelss access points other people have along the way. The more of these you contend with, the greater the likelyhood you lose the connection.

    You're absolutely right. The children should not be forced to share a room with this man. I know in the state I reside in it's not legal for an adult to share a room with an opposite sex child.

    I would say, though, go with what your attorney suggested. Or ask your attorney for some alternative routes. I'm sure he knows what's best in this situation. But, you can always call The department of health and human services to find out some routes you can take.

    Good luck!!

    I used Wikipedia as data source for the GDP comparison between LA and Chicago. LA has a 179 billion dollars higher GDP than Chicago. It may change within a year, but not so likely. I used to travel to Chicago a lot, for business, pleasure and… well… I was in and out of love with someone there… lol… 7 years ago. I thought it was yesterday… lol.
    What do you do in Chicago? What kind of work? Involved with performing arts somehow?

    By law, building owners must provide all tenants with the following levels of heat (During the heating season, October 1 through May 31):

    Between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., heat must register at least 68 degrees Fahrenheit when the outside temperature falls below 55 degrees;
    Between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., heat must register at least 55 degrees Fahrenheit when the outside temperature falls below 40 degrees.
    Tenants in New York City with heat and/or hot water complaints via the City's Citizen Service Center by dialing 311 and ask for the NYC Central Complaint Bureau's Hot Line.

    In addition, rent stabilized and rent controlled tenants can file a complaint with the New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal (718-739-6400) if the landlord is violating the above rules. For more details, see the relevant fact sheet on our web site.

    If you find that the landlord IS in fact meeting the heating standards but it still feels cold to you, you might talk with the landlord about repairing windows or other openings that are allowing drafts to enter the apartment. Sometimes some caulking, tape or insulation around windows will provide tremendous heat saving benefits.

    New York City Housing Maintenance Code requires landlords to provide and install smoke detecting devices in each apartment unit. Renters are responsible for maintenance and repair of the smoke detector(s) (i.e.; installing batteries, etc..). If the smoke detector is battery operated, the owner may charge the tenant up to $10 per smoke detector. For more information, see the Attorney General's guide on smoke detectors.

    Landlords are also required to provide and install at least one approved carbon monoxide alarm within each dwelling unit. The landlord may charge the tenant $25 per carbon monoxide alarm. More details can be found on the NYC HPD website.

    For more, visit this website: http://www.housingnyc.com/html/resources/faq/quality.html#dreading

    Also, now make sure your landlord knows that you KNOW the laws. Tell him if he doesn't comply with the laws, you will report him. So, if he wishes not to comply and he wants to avoid the hassle you are going to cause him, tell him he can let you guys out of your lease without penalty (and be specific here, with 30 days notice to find a new place, full refund of your deposit, etc. and GET the agreement in writing). So, basically, learn the laws, threaten him, give him choice to be compliant or to terminate the lease for you.

    You should read the documentation carefully that comes with mods and hacks.
    The Inteenimater (which allows your teen sims to become pregnant) has not been updated for Apartment Life. It will NOT work for Apartment Life until an Apartment Life version becomes available and will probably cause your game to malfunction and even loss of data if you install the wrong version.
    Also Squinge's hack for pregnant women to wear any clothing, if that is the one you have, has not been updated since Seasons. Some people report it works fine for later EPs but it is unsupported and is definitely risky as far as Apartment Life goes. I'm guessing it's probably the reason you are having closet problems.
    Hacks are great but you must only install the versions compatible for your game and ideally back up everything first. I can't stress that enough!
    Also Hacks always have exclamation points next to them on the custom content screen. This is the game letting you know you have mods in your game. They will show up like this even if they are correct versions and working fine.

    But now I'm a bit confused… if you uninstalled and reinstalled your game your hacks should be gone unless you physically installed them back into your Downloads folder.

    i think we’re actually wealthier than LA right now cause LA’s unemployment rate is higher than Chicago’s & they dont have federal reserves & futures stock exchanges like we do. hollywood can only do so much for LA but right now not enough.

    3. Los Angeles: 639 billion dollars;
    4. Chicago: 460 billion dollars.
    According with whatever data info, I found it on Wikipedia, Chicago and Paris have the same GDP. I’m sure it can’t be the same exact number, so Paris comes out as 5th largest economy among cities worldwide.

    I guess you'll have to level with him and tell him that this situation can't continue. Your options might include:

    — Working out an agreement with him about how many nights a week he can have a girl over. Insist that nobody has a key except you and him, and that he ushers his girl out before he leaves. In case the girl has re-copied the key, you may have to ask him to pay to have the locks re-keyed, and the landlord would have to have one of the new keys.

    — Complaining about this to the landlord. Surely it's not in the lease that additional people can live there too.

    — Telling each girl about the other one — let the chips fall where they may.

    — Offering to move out, to let one of the girls move in instead (with knowledge and permission from the landlord).

    — Consulting an attorney who deals with tenant issues. Your local bar association can provide you with some names.

    — Just moving out (breaking the lease in the process) and letting your buddy deal with the consequences. It would probably adversely affect your own credit rating, though.

    It’s funny we don’t think much about it, Chicago is actually the 4th wealthiest city in the world, after:
    1. Tokyo (nobody talks about it, because the Japanese are lame bitches… lol;
    2. New York (among the only 2 cities worldwide with a GDP surpassing 1,1 trillion dollars, not so distant from Tokyo numberwise);
    3. Los Angeles;
    4. Chicago.
